Editors note: This paper was presented by Dr. Rogers at the Texas Veterinary Medical Association meeting, March 2005, Austin. A written summary of the years herd health activities is an excellent planning tool and reminder system to assure the right products are purchased and used at the right time. A health management calendar can be laminated and posted to be a handy reminder of scheduled activities. This planning process will also point out opportunities for management improvements. Many people use the related terms religion and spirituality almost interchangeably. I would like to take a look at this set of ideas through the eyes of the Unitarian ministers and philosophers who influenced the Unitarian denomination, and wrote and signed the Humanist Manifesto of 1933. In reading this first Humanist Manifesto, I discovered that within the brief introduction religion or religious is used thirteen times. Also, among the fifteen principles in the manifesto, I found ten that made specific references to religion. That totals twenty-three such references in a four-page document. What did the generation of manifesto signers, committed to naturalistic humanism, have in mind, and how did they define religion? A majority of the signers were Unitarian ministers and few were tenured university professors like Roy Wood Sellars. This fact is apparently significant for both the development of humanism within the Unitarian denomination and for humanism as a philosophical movement. The six leading humanists of the time who had the most impact on the manifesto were John Dietrich and Curtis W. Reese, who were the main force in promoting humanism among the Unitarians; Charles Francis Potter, who established the First Humanist Society of New York as an independent humanist church; Raymond B. Bragg and Edwin H. Wilson, two Unitarian ministers who were instrumental in initiating the manifesto and seeing it through the several steps of writing, revision, signing, printing and distribution; and Roy Wood Sellars, who wrote the first draft of the manifesto.
Political participation, voting, and seeking office were all down sharply in the second half of the last century. Civic responsibility withered and almost died. Religious institutions of almost every kind are suffering losses of membership and of leadership, and the workplace no longer is a locus of friendship or of loyalty. Informal social connections plummeted, including such markers as entertaining friends at home, eating family meals together, or sharing a night out with another family. Even more important, examples of altruism, volunteering, and philanthropy were declining sharply. As Jewish wealth increases, for example, Jewish giving remains a stable percentage (or a smaller share) of discretionary income. Simple human trust in other people, the expectation of reciprocity and honesty have declined. The need for many more lawyers than practiced a half-century ago is largely because the old hand-shake or gentlemens agreement could no longer be trusted. Putnam suggests many causes for the loss of social capital in the era of the Baby Boomers: pressures of time and money, mobility and urban sprawl, technology and the imperialism of the media, together with many other putative causes. In any case, civic and professional associations, and even national goals and hopes, are inevitably dashed by these findings. Crime, anomie, poorer schools, even bad personal health are all symptoms of declining social cohesion. Not all organizations were ever benign; we know of the Ku Klux Klan and the German-American Bund. But the many ways that Americans met one another face to face, whether bonding with those like themselves or bridging to others across boundary lines, were mostly powerful forces for good. Perhaps religious life most of all depended, and still depends, on a community of people who are not strangers in the dark.

The day after the worst blackout in U.S. history, Verizon Wireless came out boasting. ATT Wireless and Sprint both reported widespread service outages thanks to a combination of power failures to back-up systems and a huge spike in phone usage. Verizon Wireless, however, reported that its network is fully operational, although customers in the New York City and other impacted areas are asked to be patient if their calls do not go through on the first attempt due to very heavy calling.

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.
Also included in the policy is coverage for equipment breakdown and earthquake and sprinkler leakage at full limits.
More than Meets the Eye Risk managers dont have to satisfy a formal education requirement to get their jobs, but they still ought to be conversant with the content of insurance contracts. That familiarity, however, has a downside because it can be the source of a false sense of security. When they talk about appraisal under the terms of a property policy, textbooks, instructional materials and, instructors have, always had a tendency to presume that the parties have resolved all coverage issues before they resort to appraisal. Thats probably the effect of common sense lurking in the subconscious and exerting a powerful influence over what gets written or spoken. An appraisal is an expensive proposition and each party has to bear a share of the cost. Because the appraiser cant consider coverage issues, the thing to do is resolve them before incurring the expense of an appraisal. Thats just common sense.

They have exotic names like Funk Pills, Amsterdam Gold, Kratom Leaf and Ayahuas-ca Sacrament and promise effects which range from the mildly euphoric to “ecstasy-style” energy rushes and hallucinogenic experiences. Ironically, the trade has been stimulated by the Governments decision last year to ban “magic mushrooms”, which contain the hallucinogenic psilocin, which had been sold openly through the internet and in places such as Camden market in north London. The ban left a gap in the market, with consumers and vendors looking for new products. Mark Evans, of every-onedoesit.com, one of the leading internet- based mail order operations, said the increase in trade since last year had been “massive”. He added: “There is a huge gap in the market. These consumers are not going to disappear, they are just looking for alternatives.” Mr Evans, whose company also sells cannabis seeds for growing, said there had been a change in the culture of people who consumed recreational drugs. “We do a lot of festivals and speak to people who say they are fed up with dealers and taking drugs - like ecstasy - where they cannot always be confident that they know what is in the pill. People want something which will not poison them and they [want to] know what they are buying.”
THE GOVERNMENT in Thailand is considering scrapping a 60-year ban on a powerful home-grown stimulant in an effort to help nearly three million people beat their addiction to “speed”. A government crackdown earlier this year on traffickers of ya ba pills unleashed a killing spree that left 2,274 suspected dealers dead. Thaksin Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, claims 90 per cent of drug supplies to Thailand have been stopped and says he is committed to rooting out the remaining dealers this year. There are an estimated 2.75 million people who habitually use speed, giving Thailand the worlds highest addiction rate. Pinya Chuayplod, a Thai senator, told the Bangkok Post that kratom could help drug users to overcome their cravings.

A specialty furniture manufacturer and retailer will open a showroom this fall in the Village Park Shopping Center, filling part of the vacancy left by the June 1 closure of Bollingers Books. Dallas-based Leather Center is spending about $50,000 to renovate 5,000 square feet at 10505 N. May Ave. Leasing agent Carl Archiniaco, vice president of Harrison Levy Co., said he will target other home improvement merchants to fill the shopping centers vacancies. He is already talking with a gift shop and framing gallery. “We hope to build around the home improvement theme within the shopping center,” Archiniaco said. “This is a theme that has been proven in many successful specialty shopping centers.”

Radio continues to be an inexpensive way for dealers and suppliers to reach their increasingly mobile customers Last year, the Minnesota-Dakota Hardware Association used $130,000 in co-op funds provided by five companies — Ace Hardware, United Hardware Distributors, TruServ, Briggs Stratton and 3M — for a five-month-long radio campaign extolling the virtues of the independent dealer over its warehouse competitors. Radio, which traces its roots back to the 1870s when it served as a point-to-point wireless telegraph, has survived several technology revolutions and continues to provide a reliable venue for dealers promotional efforts. Its relatively low cost and access to people while they are mobile are making radio a preferred and efficient medium for more companies. At least one study has even found that online dealers, with their cutting-edge approach to marketing and selling, are using radio ambitiously to get their messages out to shoppers.

As your new president, I face a challenging task when it comes to speaking to you about school finance. Let me give you my dilemma. It is the end of the school year as I write this piece and I am reflecting on the uncertain state of school finances in coming months and what these financial challenges mean for us as school system leaders. You will share my frustration that as many as half the nations students may be directly shortchanged of the education they deserve, with the remainder not immune to the impact of belt tightening. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. If youre not in that sunny camp, please continue and let me share my thoughts.
FINANCEDividend policy is the decision regarding funds to be distributed or returned to the equity investors. This can be done with common stock dividends, preferred stock dividends, or stock repurchase by the business of its own stock. The aim of this decision is to retain the resources in the business that are required to run the business or make additional investments in the business, as long as the returns earned exceed the required return. In theory, management should return or distribute all resources that cannot be invested in the business at levels in excess of the required return. In practice, however, dividends are often maintained at or changed to certain levels in order to convey the proper signals to the investors and the financial markets. For example, dividends can be maintained at moderate levels to demonstrate stability, maintained at or reduced to low levels to demonstrate the growth opportunities for the business, or increased to higher levels to demonstrate the restoration of a strong financial (capital) structure (debt and equity capital) for the business.Capital is the total of financial resources invested in the business. In terms of the sources, there are two types of capital: interest-bearing debt funds, such as loans, bonds, short-term notes, and interest-bearing payables to trade suppliers; and equity, such as common and preferred stock and the earnings retained in the business that add to stockholders share of the entities. In terms of uses, there are also two types of capital: net working capital, such as operating cash, inventory, and receivables, less interest-free payables to trade suppliers; and fixed capital, such as property, plant, and equipment. Capital is managed to maximize wealth by maximizing the rates of return on investments of capital and thus maximizing the total net present value of the business. This can be done by minimizing the amount of capital used for given business investments with given business returns.

IN ONE of its periodic efforts to tackle the rising cost of health care, the U.S. Senate is working on a bill this week that would cap lawyers fees and limit punitive damage awards in medical malpractice cases. It sounds so appealing — no one wants to see legal bills and insurance premiums siphon off money that could be spent on medical care. But before the senators pass this bill, we hope theyll consider the facts of medical malpractice rather than the myths that swirl around it. Are malpractice premiums and fear of litigation causing a shortage of doctors? No. The number of practicing physicians has risen by more than 70,000 since 2000 and reached an all-time high last year, according to the American Medical Association. There are certain communities where certain specialists find their malpractice premiums prohibitive, and thats worrisome. But even there, the impact on health care seems modest; a study of Florida by the respected journal Health Affairs found almost no impact on patients ability to get procedures such as brain surgery and Caesarean births. Is malpractice litigation out of control? No, malpractice payouts have been growing at about 4 percent per year since 1991, or about the rate of inflation, and the average payout to an aggrieved patient is about $113,000. Of course this doesnt stop some members of Congress from continuing to talk about the crushing costs of malpractice litigation and insurance premiums. Maybe they should update their homework. A new report by the Consumer Federation of America points out that malpractice insurance premiums, after rising at 40 to 60 percent annually in the early part of this decade, have slowed to less than 2 percent annually during the last year. Interestingly, premiums rose just as fast in states that cap malpractice awards as in those that dont.
In the last column (Medical Malpractice: The First Stage, The Physician Executive, January-February, 2008) I discussed the importance of proper documentation to avoid a lawsuit or gain an edge if one is filled. Now, assume your best efforts failed and a lawsuit is under way. I cannot describe the feeling of opening an envelope with your name on a long legal document with the words: breach. standard of care. damages. wrongful death written in black and white. Your first instinct is to vomit. Now begins the discovery phase of the litigation process, where the plaintiff and defense have an opportunity to test the strength of their cases by taking depositions and submitting evidence to be used at trial.

Yellowstone Denied
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — The parks popular west entrance is opening to snowmobiles and snowcoaches for the first time this winter, although some routes remain closed due to a lack of snow, park officials said Friday. The West Yellowstone, Mont., entrance is scheduled to open Saturday, park spokeswoman Cheryl Matthews said. Snowmobiles and snowcoaches will be allowed on roads between the west entrance and Old Faithful, Madison to Norris and Norris to Canyon. The road from Mammoth to Norris continues to have bare spots and will remain closed to snowmobiles, although snowcoaches are allowed, Matthews said.
Every year, 3 million people visit Yellowstone National Park. But even on a tourist-packed summer weekend, you can unload your kayak at Yellowstone Lake and paddle for 10 minutes and be all alone. If you kayak on Yellowstone Lake, youll go for hours hearing nothing except the soft sound of blades dipping through water. If you keep close to the shoreline, youll see wildlife. Yellowstone offers silence-seekers 110 miles of shoreline. Most of it is pristine and quiet. Even around Grant Village — where there are lodges, cabins, stores, restaurants and 425 campsites — you can find yourself alone on the shore.

The Journal staff Waukesha Shawn Sanders dropped out of school in the ninth grade to help her mother raise younger siblings. The fourth of 12 children, Sanders says she thought she knew it all when it came to parenting. She found out differently after attending the Families Learning Together program at Waukesha County Technical College. The program celebrated its one-year anniversary earlier this week, as Sanders and her 3-year- old daughter, Kayla Heartz, joined other moms and kids in a celebration at WCTCs Waukesha campus, 327 E. Broadway.
BEST HIKE WITH KIDS Weve said it before, but well say it again. This hike has everything - mountain vistas, meadows painted with wildflowers, a rock canopy that will forever be called “the cave,” marshes, aspen groves, funny-shaped rocks, and a shallow stream that screams, “Step into me! I dare you!” Theres so much here that it might take your family a while to go the two miles, but its always worth the time. To get there: Take U.S. Highway 24 west to Divide; turn left on Colorado Highway 67; go about five miles and watch for Crags Campground sign. Turn left and follow dirt road to trailhead parking.
Relationships with family and friends matter a great deal to children and are also important to long-term emotional and psychological development. The United Kingdom compares poorly in that area with other countries. Most distressingly, we have the lowest proportion reporting that their peers are kind and helpful - less than half say that is the case compared with more than 80 per cent in Switzerland.

REFINANCED GRANDFATHERED DEBT QUADS AS grandfathered debt if the mortgage proceeds do not exceed the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. Home mortgage interest expense is deductible if certain requirements are met. In general, mortgage interest expense is deductible only if the home is collateral for the debt (secured debt). If the borrower cannot pay the debt, the lender can use the home to satisfy the loan. Interest expense paid on home acquisition debt, home equity debt, and grandfather debt is generally considered deductible. A mortgage taken out after October 13, 1987, to acquire, build, or substantially improve a qualified residence is classified as home acquisition debt. Qualifying debt is limited to $1 million ($500,000 each for married filing separately). The $1 million limitation is reduced (but not below zero) by any grandfathered debt. If home acquisition debt is refinanced, the new debt will qualify as home acquisition debt only up to the balance of the old mortgage prior to refinancing. The interest attributable to the additional debt will be nondeductible personal interest unless it qualifies as home equity debt.
DEDUCTIBILITY Of Home Mortgage Points Points are paid by a borrower to a lender as a prepaid interest charge for the loan in the year the loan is made. This article discusses the general deductibility of points for home mortgage loans, with special attention on refinancing loans.

All I had to do was take the psychological test, and I was in. “Do you ever have black, tarry bowel movements?” one of the questions asked, and I wavered, sure my answer would mean everything to New York Life. “Yes,” I decided, which couldnt have been the only reason I flunked. My father was disappointed and I ashamed. And now I think my failure was a kind of insurance-the best I ever fell into-against doing such work. Ever since, Ive tried to live my life so that living would be its own annuity, in its own time. Abet in the dark, the beneficiaries always in doubt.
There is a growing concern all over the world about the cost of insurance. At the same time there is a growing desire, even need, to increase insurance cover. This logically leads to higher costs. In the following article the author suggests that it leads mainly to loss of control of costs, without necessarily providing additional benefits. In a few words, you may not be buying what you want or need, and may be buying something you dont.

Seventy-three Sailors and 46 Marines dead. six Sailors and five Marines totally disabled. one Sailor and 13 Marines partly disabled. another 131 Sailors and 27 Marines with major injuries (involving five or more lost workdays). Those FY04 numbers are grim reminders of the toll our nations highways continue to take on our most precious resource. Driving defensively means not only taking responsibility for yourself and your actions but also keeping an eye on the other guy. The National Safety Council suggests these guidelines to help reduce your risks on the road: * Dont start the engine without securing each passenger in the car, including children and pets. Safety belts save thousands of lives each year. Lock all doors.
Staying Alice is a photo-journalistic motion picture about defensive driving. It was entered in the Los Angeles Cinema Clubs year-end competition. Although it did not win the Sweepstakes Trophy, it did arouse considerable comment that I would like to share with other filmmakers. That is the pattern of the entire film-with automobile, apartment house and oil storage tank fires; motorcycle and motorscooter accidents; and series of auto accidents. We included five engines, Ambulances, and a window washer who got in trouble when the slight which held one end of his platform gave way and left him dangling near the top of a high rise office building on Wilshire Boulevard. Several people have asked me if I am an ambulance chaser or if I had a police radio scanner in my car in order to collect footage for Staying Alive. The answer to both questions is, “No” I just happen to have a loaded 8mm camera in the car most of the time. When I see something interesting I try to get full coverage - close-ups, expressions, names, locations and details.

The lower cost of living in west-central Florida has been a major attraction for young renters.
Seeking greater influence in presidential electoral politics, Florida is gearing up to leapfrog almost all the other states and set a Jan. 29 primary election date, with an option to go even earlier. The bill to adjust the states primary date passed the state House with an overwhelming 115-1 majority and appears likely to pass the Senate as well. Floridas GOP chairman has officially endorsed the idea, defying warnings from national GOP leaders about the loss of Florida delegates at the partys nominating convention.

GARFIELD A young companys software speeds the production of law-firm paperwork A GARFIELD STARTUP backed by a software entrepreneur says its product will change the way law firms work by improving productivity and cutting the cost of generating legal documents.
I. Introduction Each chief must be thoroughly familiar with the LA regulation and should have a well-worn, tabbed copy of it on his or her desktop at all times. Army Regulation (AR) 27-3 (2)–which is currently under revision–provides a detailed explanation of who may be a client as well as the following guidance: (1) providing LA services; (2) training for LA providers; and (3) automating the office and maintaining files. (3) It also explains who is responsible for providing LA at installations, and who is eligible to receive it. (4) Chapter Three, Legal Assistance Services, is particularly important, because it details the types of LA services, (5) client services, (6) and preventive law services (7) which LAOs may or must provide. Appendix A is exceptionally helpful, because it lists all Army regulations that relate to LA. It is a gold mine of information to determine what regulation covers such issues as reports of survey, identification cards, Army Community Service, or notary services. (8)
The thought of suicide is a great consolation: by means of it one gets successfully through many a bad night.(1) As in the abortion debate, proponents of assisted suicide have begun to focus their efforts on legal reform. In November of 1991, Initiative 119, a ballot measure in Washington state that would have legalized active euthanasia for competent terminally ill patients, narrowly failed, 46% to 54%.(2) In the three months between December 1991 and March 1992, legislators in four states–Michigan,(3) New Hampshire,(4) Maine,(5) and Iowa(6)–introduced legislation to legalize either assisted suicide or physician aid-in-dying for the terminally ill. In addition, the group Californians Against Human Suffering gathered 570,000 signatures placing a physician aid-in-dying measure on the ballot in California.(7) In the absence of legal reform, assisted suicide for the terminally ill is now occurring outside of the law throughout the United States.(8) Rather than asking physicians to risk their professions and futures and requiring that patients continue to suffer against their will, carefully drafted laws legalizing assisted suicide in narrow cases should be passed.

Q I bought exercise videos for the arms, legs, abs and buns that guarantee results in just eight minutes a day. Can you really work each muscle group in such a short time? Also, since the workouts are so quick, do I need to wait 48 hours between workouts? You definitely need to rest 48 hours between videos for each muscle group. If youre doing your sets properly — lifting heavy-enough weights so that you near fatigue between eight and 12 repetitions — then your-muscles need those two days to repair and recover. If you feel ready to work the same muscle group two days in a row, you havent used enough-resistance. You may want to do two of these eight-minute videos per day, alternating legs and buns with abs and arms. If you do just one video a day, Cunningham advises against doing the legs and buns videos on consecutive days because there is likely some overlap in the muscles worked. For instance, exercises for your butt, such as the squat and lunge, also work your front and rear thigh muscles. A good rotation would be legs on Day One, arms the next, butt on Day Three and then abs on Day Four.
This is an exercise to help “get in touch” with the neutral spine. Lie on your back, bend the knees and place the feet flat on the floor about six inches in front of the sitting bones. Place the arms by your sides, palms down. Without tilting the pubic bone and tailbone up, try to press the length of the back into the flat surface. At the same time, contract the abdominal muscles down towards the spine. Feel as though you are pulling the belly button inwards. Do these last movements while exhaling through the mouth, with a “haaah” or a “ssshhhh” sound to help access the abdominal muscles. Feel the lower ribs pressing down and spreading. When you exhale, dont let the back lift or arch. Once you feel the muscles you are trying to isolate, any abdominal work done will be more effective.
Starting an exercise programme is the easy bit, keeping it going takes a bit of incentive. Try these methods to help stay motivated: 1. Train with someone. Having an arrangement with someone means you are less likely to skip a session, even if the weathers terrible. 2. Schedule exercise into the weeks ahead. If you make diary entries to commit to specific classes or sessions, you are more likely to go. 3. Relieve boredom. If you are counting the seconds or number of reps until you are finished, try to focus on something else. Listen to some music or a language tape.

IF YOU VISIT TUCSON this fall or winter, be ready for impossibly beautiful sunrises, toasty days, and birds. Birds? More than that, birds that seem to draw double takes from everyone, serious birder or not. Youll find everything from bright red cardinals to painted redstarts, Chihuahuan ravens to clown-faced acorn woodpeckers. Best birding (particularly in open desert) is early in the day. If youre out a sunrise, youll be astonished at the number of variety of birds you can see. At midday, you probably wont find much. Take binoculars and a field guide. And before you set out, call Tucson Audubons rare-bird hotline–(602) 798-1005–to learn about recent sightings of unusual birds.
Local and state health officials are urging physicians to watch for patients with flu-like symptoms who just returned from Asia in light of the recent bird flu outbreak there — but cautioned that the risk of contracting the disease is low. Earlier this week, the state advised local health departments to ask patients suffering from pneumonia, flu or other respiratory illness whether they had traveled to affected areas in Asia in the past 10 days. There are no reported U.S. cases of the virus. Ten people died — eight in Vietnam and two in Thailand — after the virus jumped to humans.

Certainly not a remarkable lady called Anne Scheiber, whose exploits in the stock market have just come to light. For those of you who may have missed the story, this is the lady who spent her working life as a tax clerk in the Internal Revenue Service (the American equivalent of our Inland Revenue) and who took up investing only in her fifties. Armed only with her meagre income, and despite being completely untutored in the finer arts of investment, Miss Scheiber was so successful at investing her modest spinsters mite that when she died earlier this year at the age of 101, she had turned her initial savings of $5,000 into a fortune worth no less than $22m. Her dividend income alone came to $750,000 a year by the time of her death, completely dwarfing anything she had earned in her working life. It is a remarkable story from which one can draw several morals. One is the obvious one that so-called experts have no prerogative on wisdom when it comes to investing in the stock market. Common sense and application can take you a long way. In Miss Scheibers case, her success stemmed from following some simple rules - investing in a limited number of well established companies that have a strong business franchise and the ability to generate significant amounts of cash now. Her biggest holdings were in proven cashgenerators such as Coca-Cola and the drugs company Bristol- Meyers Squibb. A second, related, moral is that it pays to be patient. Putting money into smaller, more speculative companies will often generate bigger returns in the short run, but for those willing to take a long-term view, there is nothing to beat buying shares in consistent money-spinners that have the capacity to pay handsome dividends. The returns over time can be just as big, and the risks are much reduced, particularly if you have personal knowledge of the company and what it does.
INVESTMENTSBy contrast, an individual who buys an annuity pays the insurance company a sum of money and, in return, will receive a monthly income for as long as the purchaser lives. Naturally, the longer one lives, the more money is received. The holder of an annuity never outlives the return, regardless of how long-lived the individual is. Life insurance protects ones beneficiaries against financial loss as a result of the purchasers dying too soon, while annuities protect purchasers against financial loss as a result of living longer than their funds do.

Its not every day you see the pick-up variety of limousines. But according to Brad Hollar, president of Accente Limousines, theres a need for the 20-passenger vehicle with a bed in the back. We live in Oklahoma and half the people here have pick-up trucks, Hollar said of the $125 to $150 an hour ride. A company in California custom-made the $80,000 vehicle that Hollar claims is the only one of its kind in the Oklahoma City area. Weve only had it for about 60 days. And its leased out at least every Friday and Saturday night and often during the week.
PLEASANTON — From the moment Bill Wheeler told his friends and family that he was serious about getting into the limousine business, few took him for his word. Wheeler was the last person they could picture going into a business that revolved around punctuality. “I had never been on time anywhere in my life,” Wheeler said. “What people didnt understand is that if I were paid to be on time, then thats an entirely different matter.”

Prosperity in the U.S. construction industry was again on the house, as the residential segment continues to exhibit most of the recent growth in the domestic building industry. The construction industry appears to be hovering at a level close to last years pace, says Robert A. Murray, vice president of economic affairs for McGraw-Hill Construction. Housing remains very healthy, and the upturn for non-residential building in February was a welcome development after a sluggish January. Murray says that higher steel prices could be putting a crimp in the nonresidential segments. Over the course of 2004, its expected that nonresidential building will see a modest strengthening trend. Admittedly, though, this years sharp increase in steel prices has made the nonresidential upturn less certain, given the impact that higher costs and materials shortages may have on individual construction projects. At this juncture, it appears that the nonresidential upturn will be dampened but not derailed, assuming steel prices settle back by midyear, but the situation clearly bears watching.

Landscape Construction by David Sauter, Delmar Publishers, 2000, 384 pp., Paperbound. $64.95 This textbook is organized into nine sections to reflect the logical steps in the landscape construction process. The first section provides a good introduction to preconstruction issues. This section contains eight chapters with topics that include an overview of the construction process, legal and safety issues, reading and interpreting landscape construction documents, basic construction math, estimating project costs, and basic construction skills and techniques. Section two addresses the construction site preparation process in two chapters: preserving existing site elements (i.e., protecting environmentally sensitive areas in the landscape during constructing) and removing unwanted site elements (i.e., removal of unwanted plant material to make room for new elements in the landscape).

WAS THAT a date. or not?” Gone are the days when a man and a woman meeting over a drink knew the outing was undoubtedly a first date. With lines blurring between the platonic and the romantic, defining what constitutes a first date has become a guessing game, as maddening as catching a gnat with chopsticks. The various intentions behind a first date, from finding a mate to bedding a casual-sex partner, has forced many singles to define exactly what it is.

HypnotherapyHypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic intervention . The therapist leads the patient to positive change while the patient is deeply relaxed in a state of heightened suggestibility called trance.
In therapeutic interviews described as either hypnosis or biofeedback, the patient must change mental imagery to achieve the desired state or physiologic change. If the therapists monitors physiologic measures while coaching a patient through a self-hypnotic exercise, invariably there will be changes in measures (e.g., increased peripheral temperature, decreased pulse rate). Regardless of the confusion, the benefit of adding physiologic monitoring (biofeedback) to hypnosis is the enhancement of a sense of personal control and competency. Children recognize that by changing their thinking, they can impact body processes. This makes the experience more concrete and provides trance ratification and gives a child increased confidence about achieving the desired therapeutic outcome. The aim is only to allow diplomats to carry out their functions with security and confidentiality, and also to recognise diplomats function as representatives of their country. It does not grant them freedom to flout local law, although they may be immune to local jurisdiction to enforce such laws. Contrary to a widespread belief, a diplomatic mission is not “extra-territorial”: it is, however, given the protection of inviolability within the receiving state. This rule refers to its premises and diplomatic dispatches. But all privileges and immunities are solely directed towards facilitating performance of diplomatic missions.

Franco of Cologne Franco of Cologne (active ca. 1250-1260), or Franco of Paris, was the outstanding music theorist of his century. Francos fame derives from his treatise Ars cantus mensurabilis (The Art of Measurable Music), written about 1260. This treatise is preserved in seven manuscripts dating from the 13th to the 15th century and written in France, England, Sweden, and Italy. Numerous quotations from it and references to it appear in the literature of several countries, and its great influence on composition between 1250 and 1320 can be detected in many works. None of Francos own compositions can be identified. Some motets are briefly quoted or cited in treatises; only one motet, in a German manuscript of the 13th century, has been tentatively ascribed to him.
According to Art Cologne director Gerard A. Goodrow, the U.S.-born Cologne resident who was hired three years ago to revamp the event [see Front Page, Dec. 04], the move is approved of by key international dealers and long-time participants in the fair, as well as by the Cologne art community and the local government, which has pledged greater support from museums and other municipal institutions. In 2007 the fair will be held Apr. 18-22 at the K61nmesse, displacing Cologne Fine Art, with its emphasis on antiques and old masters, and the museum design and services fair, Exponatec Cologne, both of which will occur Oct. 31-Nov. 4, 2007.

Martha M. Doss, of Lexington, Virginia, writes, “When I finish cleaning up, I put the wet and soapy sponge (no metal on it, of course) on a paper towel in the microwave for one minute on HIGH. When its done, I use the wet paper towel to clean the microwave oven, which kills two birds with one shot. The sponge is now clean, and the oven is clean and odor free.”

An increasing number of people around the East Bay choose to launch their own business as a second career, often running them out of their homes. However, many say they dont really know what they are doing. “When you work from home, you dont have people to bounce ideas off of,” said Dan Stone, who launched the Web marketing service 360village.com after a career in urban planning. “(Theres) no quick feedback or access to other resources that you have in a traditional working environment.” The city of Pleasant Hill, where a whopping 28 percent of businesses are home-based, has organized a conference to help aspiring entrepreneurs.
When you set up your home business an exit plan was probably the last thing on your mind. Heather Douglas offers some tips on how to build your business into an asset worth selling. What are you going to do when you “finish” with your home business? Do you have an exit strategy? Have you benchmarked the important steps along the way to achieving this and are you working to turn them into reality? Home business owners have a variety of exit options, but there is no “right” answer and you will need to decide for yourself which one (or combination) suits you:
HOME-BASED BUSINESSToday, home-based businesses run the gamut from consulting firms and advertising agencies to photography studios and free-lance writing services. According to Scott Clark in the Houston Business Journal, home-based businesses create more than 8,000 new jobs each day and generate nearly $400 billion in annual revenues. In fact, such well-known companies as Amway, Ben and Jerrys, Dominos Pizza, Estee Lauder, Hallmark, and Nike all started as home-based businesses. The main driving force behind the growth of home-based businesses is the increasing capability and availability of computer and communications technology. Powerful yet affordable home computer systems equipped with modems allow people to send and receive messages, transfer data, and conduct research from their homes, largely eliminating the need to commute to a place of employment. Similarly, sophisticated software programs offering applications in desktop publishing, database management, financial management, and word processing enable one individual to do the work formerly handled by an entire support staff. In addition, the widespread use of cellular phones, pagers, voice mail systems, and toll-free telephone numbers has enhanced the ability of home-based business owners to remain connected to the outside business world.
